Club Descriptions
Beginning Band (1st year)
Students are taught to read music as they learn to play a brass instrument (flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone, percussion). Instrument choices will be worked out during the first month of programming. Students are expected to have an instrument at home and practice daily. Instrument loan and rental programs available.
Continuing Band (2nd year)
Students with at least 1 or more years of musical experience continue to read music and refine their practice in playing a brass instrument. Students are expected to have an instrument at home and practice daily. Instrument loan and rental programs available.
Beginning Orchestra (1st year)
Students are taught to read music as they learn to play a string instrument (violin, cello, viola, bass). Instrument choices will be worked out during the first month of programming. Students are expected to have an instrument at home and practice daily. Instrument loan and rental programs available.
Continuing Orchestra (2nd year)
Students with at least 1 or more years of strings experience continue to read music and refine their practice in playing a string instrument. Students are expected to have an instrument at home and practice daily. Instrument loan and rental programs available.
Burst Reading
Students develop their reading skills individually and in small groups while receiving targeted instruction by an adult. Improving overall literacy and comprehension are at the core of these sessions.
Jr. Librarian
Students assist our library media specialist in a variety of research based tasks. These include organizing materials for teachers and staff, shelving books, and technology troubleshooting.
Mustang Leader Club
This club seeks to empower and educate young learners in a variety of leadership skills through team-building activities and community service projects. Mustang leaders develop confidence, responsibility, and a sense of social awareness at school and throughout the community.
Reading/Book Club
Students gather to explore and discuss books they have an interest in. This club fosters a love for reading, comprehension, and social interaction while building strong literacy skills and a sense of community with their peers.
Tutorial (Homework help)
A quiet environment for students to catch up on homework and receive extra support from FGSD staff.
OBOB (Oregon Battle of the Books)
Oregon Battle of the Books is designed to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, to broaden reading interests, to increase reading comprehension, promote academic excellence, and to promote cooperative learning and teamwork among students.
Culture Club
This club introduces students to the rich diversity of cultures around the world as well as those found in the FGSD community. Here they will learn about traditions, foods, music, and art from various cultures.
Chicas Club
A proactive approach to empower Latina girls to develop leadership potential, build a strong cultural identity, adopt a healthy lifestyle and achieve academic success.
Fun/Juegos Club
Have fun playing a variety of indoor and outdoor games connected to Hispanic culture, with your peers while speaking Spanish. Beginning to advanced Spanish speakers are encouraged to join.
Basketball Club
This club functions like a pickup game where students of all abilities join together to have fun playing basketball. Healthy sportsmanship and teamwork are at the core of every game.
Soccer Fitness
A blend of Soccer Club and Fitness Club. Students participate in group exercises, games and challenges that encourage movement and strength building. Healthy sportsmanship and teamwork are at the core of every game.
Audio/Visual Design
Students work together to create multimedia presentations, basic video editing, sound recording, and simple graphic design. Projects include content and announcements for our Tom McCall website and YEARBOOK. This club encourages teamwork, problem solving, and an appreciation for the art of storytelling through multimedia.
Art Club
Students explore various forms of artistic expression through drawing, painting, crafts and more! Together with their peers, they will learn about different art techniques and build a deeper appreciation for the world of visual arts.
Woodworking
Students learn about woodworking and craftsmanship by engaging in hands-on activities such as using basic tools to create wooden projects. With an emphasis on safety, this club provides a structured and supervised environment for students to explore their creativity while applying classroom concepts such as measuring and fractions.
Lego Robotics
Research. Learn. Build! Working in teams, students build and program robots using Lego kits. This club promotes creativity, problem solving, and critical thinking in a fun environment.
Clay Arts
Students work with clay to create various art pieces. This club encourages learners to explore their imagination, learn different clay techniques, and gain an appreciation for the world of visual arts through the medium of clay.
Cooking Club
Students learn the basics of cooking and food preparation by engaging in hands-on activities like measuring ingredients, following recipes, and preparing simple dishes. With an emphasis on safety, this club provides a structured and supervised environment for students to explore their creativity while applying classroom concepts such as fractions and conversions.
Soccer Club
This club functions like a pickup game where students of all abilities join together to have fun playing soccer. Healthy sportsmanship and teamwork are at the core of every game.
Fitness Club
This club promotes physical activity and healthy habits in a structured environment. Students participate in group exercises, games and challenges that encourage movement and strength building. Primary goals include improving overall health, enhancing physical fitness, and teaching kids about the importance of a healthy lifestyle.
Arts & Crafts
Students create seasonal crafts through various art mediums: clay, paint, paper, chalk, yarn, glass. All crafts are brought home when completed.
Volleyball Club
This club functions like a pickup game where students of all abilities join together to have fun playing volleyball. Healthy sportsmanship and teamwork are at the core of every game.
Roots & Shoots Club
Students will design & implement projects that benefit our environment, animals and improve our human community. Activities will develop a meaningful connection to science and the natural world.
SMILE (Science & Math Investigative Learning Experiences)
Sponsored by Oregon State University, students participate in hands-on, interactive science & math projects, working towards a competition in the Spring.
Sports Club
Have fun. Stay active. Cheer on your peers! This club provides a structured and enjoyable environment for students to engage in a variety of sports and organized play. Healthy sportsmanship and teamwork are at the core of every game.
Chess For Success
All levels welcome! Students interact with peers on a social level while engaging in chess, challenging one another with the strategies of the game.
